In the wake of rising energy costs and global warming, many cities have begun to incorporate sustainable practices into neighborhood development. Beginning in the Upper Chester neighborhood, participants will learn about infill development plans, infrastructure improvements and the overall “green” planning process that will make this one of the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) projects in the country. At EcoVillage, a “green” market-rate housing development centered around a “green” transit stop, participants will learn about plans to redesign a recreation center in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. A visit to the Environmental Center, the first “green” building in Cleveland and home to several environmental nonprofits as well as a neighborhood bank branch, will allow participants to observe firsthand what makes a “green” building green. The final stop will be the Great Lakes Brewery. An anchor in the Ohio City neighborhood, this environmentally friendly business is a favorite of environmentalists and neighborhood residents alike. Here we will meet the owners, grab a brew and learn how Great Lakes Brewery has helped to enhance the neighborhood.
