    • This nonpartisan research organizationand policy insttute conducts research and analyzes government policies and programs, with an emphasis on those affecting low- and moderate-income people.

  • Center for Community Change

    • Weekly updates while Congress is in session on public policy affecting low-income people.

  • Center for Law and Social Policy

    • CLASP is a national non-profit organization with expertise in both law and policy affecting the poor. Through education, policy research and advocacy, CLASP seeks to improve the economic security of low-income families with children and secure access for low-income persons to our civil justice system.

  • Economic Policy Institute

    • The Economic Policy Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank that seeks to broaden the public debate about strategies to achieve a prosperous and fair economy.

  • Inequality.org

    • Inequality.org is a network of journalists, writers and researchers trying to look beyond conventional economics and its notions of prosperity and progress. It is a nonprofit organization which does not advocate any particular policy or set of policies, and whose aim is to circulate information and ideas that are not widely covered in the media.

      The National Priorities Project (NPP) offers citizen and community groups tools and resources to shape federal budget and policy priorities which promote social and economic justice. Since 1983, the National Priorities Project (NPP) has been the only group in the country that focuses on the impacts of federal tax and spending policies at the community level. We link political analysis to action by serving as a bridge between policy organizations and grassroots groups. We translate policy information into everyday language and assist national and grassroots groups in their efforts on such issues as public schools, renewable energy, fair taxes and military spending.

  • Shelterforce

    • Shelterforce is the nation’s oldest continually-published housing and community development magazine. For over two decades, Shelterforce has been a primary forum for organizers, activists, and advocates in the affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization movements.

  • www.workforceusa.net
    • www.workforceusa.net is a virtual library of resources for workforce development practitioners of all kinds, providing access to over 2100 of the best tools and materials available from hundreds of organizations. It is organized into 11 major workforce development functions and topics and subtopics within each function. Each function area houses different kinds of resources for a broad spectrum of uses (data, analysis, examples, tools, websites, etc.) If you register on the site you can indicate your interests and receive updates based on those choices. Additionally, once registered the site allows you to create your own favorites section, storing resources for future reference. Registrants can rate the resources on the site and provide information critiquing the resource or describing its usefulness in their work. This site has been funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

  • Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees
    • GCIR is a national network of more than 175 foundation staff and trustees representing 115 foundations with diverse grantmaking interests and geographic areas of focus. GCIR was established in 1990 with two primary goals: to promote awareness and understanding among grantmakers about national and international migration trends and public policies and other issues affecting immigrants and refugees; and to increase financial support for projects and activities benefiting immigrant and refugee communities.

  • American unions are building high road partnerships in communities all around the country. The AFL-CIO has created the Working for America Institute to support these union strategies for building good jobs and strong communities.

  • Service Employees International Union

  • The Discount Foundation is a small, private grant making foundation. It's sole grant program, "Jobs and Living Wages for the Poor", focuses on expanding job opportunities, wages, and benefits for poor and working people, including participants in state and local workfare programs.

  • Phoenix Fund for Workers and Communities was established to add a new resource to the growing grassroots movement for economic justice. Through funding and networking programs, The Fund supports organizing projects, policy campaigns and civic collaborations that empower low-wage workers, their families and communities.

Leadership Development in Rural Areas

  • Thriving Hometowns Network is a compilation of more than 50 original and in-depth community and economic development case studies drawn from small communities (most less than 10,000 population). The Network is a fully searchable electronic database, available free of charge to anyone with Internet access. Think of it as a collection of "virtual site vists!"

  • "Strengthening the Rural-Urban Connection" is a project of the Heartland Center for Leadership Development, an independent, Nebraska-based nonprofit. This site is useful for community practitioners seeking practical tools and expertise on rural-urban connections, including a list of articles and publications related to the topic. 

  • The Rural Development Leadership Network is a national, multicultural social change organization that supports community-based development in poor rural areas through hands-on projects, education, leadership development, peer exchange, and networking. Participants implement a field project in their own community, pursue related independent study, and take part in RDLN's month-long Rural Development Institute at the University of California at Davis to earn an academic degree (B.A., M.A., Ph.D.). RDLN markets rural women's products online and convenes National Network Assemblies, delegations to international meetings, and Writing Retreats for Community Buliders.

Welfare Reform in Rural Areas
The Welfare Information Network has information on rural issues in welfare research, policy making and program design and implementation.

Children and Youth in Rural Areas

  • The Rural School and Community Trust is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to enlarging student learning and improving community life by strengthening relationships between rural schools and communities and engaging students in community-based public work. Through advocacy, research, and outreach, the Rural Trust strives to create a more favorable environment for rural schooling, for student work with a public audience and use, and for more active community participation in schooling.

  • The School at the Center Web site is a resource for communities and their schools interested in the pursuit of community-based education and community development. Its examples from rural community-schools provide a local flavor of teacher inventiveness and student participation in community development efforts. Contact information is provided so that visitors may call or e-mail a particular teacher or school administrator or student or community citizen to learn more about their work, and to determine the relevance of that work to their own local context. The School at the Center sponsored the Rural Funders Working Group's site visit to Nebraska in September 2000.
