Redevelopment and Race: Planning a Finer City in Postwar Detroit, by June Manning Thomas, published by Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, Maryland, and London, England. Author June Manning Thomas writes on the decline of Detroit, Michigan, from the 1940s to the present, focusing on the roles of professional urban planning and race relations. Using a historical analysis of the interaction between redevelopment and racial issues, Thomas illustrates how the city became one of urban decay and argues that today a different approach is needed - one that places social justice, equity, and community ahead of purely physical and economic objectives.
