NFG REPORTS SUMMER 1999 ISSUE TWO • VOLUME SIX Editor’s Note In February NFG’s Board of Directors endorsed the formation of a Rural Funders Working Group described within this issue of NFG Reports. Across the country, a growing number of funders are interested in advancing grantmaker awareness of rural issues and rural communities. They also seek to increase the pie of resources available to rural communities, especially those that are persistently poor. The first article, on organizing in rural communities, begins with an overview of rural communities and the changes and opportunities they are facing. It ends with suggestions for funders interested in getting involved in rural areas. This is followed by interviews with trustees of two NFG members: Barbara Meyer of the Bert and Mary Meyer Foundation, and Leroy Johnson of the Southern Partners Fund. These interviews describe a new and innovative philanthropy, created and operated by experienced rural community leaders in the south. In the coming months the Rural Funders Working Group will examine these issues in greater depth. -Spence Limbocker
