NFG REPORTS
WINTER 2000 ISSUE FOUR •
VOLUME SEVEN
Report to Members
by Mary Jo Mullan and Garland Yates, Co-Chairs
As funders with a long history of grantmaking in Detroit, we were particularly
pleased with the turnout and energy for NFG's fall conference and annual
meeting. The planning committee spent many, many hours thinking about
how best to engage NFG members in a dialogue about the New Economy and
what it means for low-income neighborhoods and their residents. And based
on the evaluations, the committee successfully challenged and stimulated
conference goers. Thanks to all of the planning committee members, listed
on page 6, for their hard work. We've tried to capture some of the conference
highlights in photographs in this issue of NFG Reports.
NFG Annual Meeting
We thanked outgoing Board members Gloria Guerrero and Anita Nager for
their commitment and dedication to NFG at the annual meeting. Both served
on NFG's board for six years and have seen it grow and develop over those
years. Our membership doubled during their tenure. The annual meeting
then elected new board members for the coming year: Roland Anglin, Seedco,
and Luz Vega-Marquis, California Community Technology Foundation, were
elected to second three-year terms and Peter Beard, the Fannie Mae Foundation;
Mil Duncan, the Ford Foundation; Maria Mottola, the New York Foundation;
and Frank Sanchez, the Needmor Fund, were elected to first terms. Rounding
out our leadership updates, the NFG Board announced that Mary Jo Mullan,
the F.B. Heron Foundation, and Garland Yates, the Annie E. Casey Foundation,
will serve as NFG co-chairs for the coming year. We want to give our special
thanks to outgoing co-chair Sara Gould for her three years of service
as NFG co-chair.
In addition to our members' commitment of time and talent that make
our programs possible, NFG member organizations underwrite our activities.
At the annual meeting, we extended our appreciation for the grants and
sponsorships we received in 2000, listed on page 7. We also continued
our discussion of NFG's Plan for the Future.
In 1997 the NFG board adopted a three-year strategic plan that has guided
our development. We have set up working groups, published Toolboxes, developed
our Web site, and expanded our participation in Council on Foundations-related
activities. A new three-year Plan for the Future is being shepherded by
Sara Gould, Ms. Foundation for Women; Henry Allen, the Hyams Foundation;
Anita Nager, New York Community Trust; Bob Jaquay, George Gund Foundation;
Luz Vega-Marquis, California Community Technology Foundation; and Antonio
Manning, Washington Mutual. NFG leaders moderated lively discussions on
NFG's future direction during the meeting to assure alignment with member
interests. All NFG members will be surveyed by the end of the year about
their ideas for where we should be going. Then, the NFG board will finalize
and release our new plan in January 2001. Please contact any of the Plan
for the Future committee members to let them know about your vision for
our organization.
NFG Member Directory and Web site
Have you tried to use the online version of NFG's Member Directory yet?
We recommend it to you. It's a great way to quickly contact colleagues
via email, or you can look up their phone number, address or other information.
Just go to www.nfg.org and click "Member Directory" in the upper
right hand corner. (If you can't remember your passcode, email nfg@nfg.org
and the NFG staff will get it right to you.) About 100 people registered
for the NFG conference online and many more used the resource materials
on the New Economy, prompting us to start thinking about even more ways
that we can use the NFG Web site. If you have ideas, please pass them
on.
Our best wishes in the coming year!
