NFG Social Justice Institute

NFG 2010 Annual Conference Pre-Conference Institute (with Pre- and Post-Institute Teleconference Sessions)

NFG has offered the Social Justice Institute for the past three years. For the 2010 NFG Annual Conference in Minneapolis, the board, staff, and session faculty have been working toward the creation of a multi-session learning series that utilizes the experiential knowledge of participants, creates a network of social justice philanthropy practitioners, and offers a training that engages grantmakers in the study of power and money as tools for social justice movement building. In 2010, the Social Justice Institute will include Pre- and Post-Institute teleconference discussions.

Power and Money: Social Justice Grantmaking

Social justice philanthropy is using money to shift power and includes several broad areas of work such as community development, youth and community organizing, economic opportunity, workforce development, anti-poverty efforts, and civic engagement. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a professional development and a peer exchange session for new and established grantmakers working in or interested in the field of social justice. With everyone in the room serving as co-faculty and co-learners, we will explore the skills and strategies of social justice grantmaking and focus on developing a network of support and resources for grantmakers engaged in this critical area. Program topics to be covered in the Institute will include:

  • What is effective social justice grant making?
  • Tools and strategies for setting a social justice agenda
  • Lessons and priorities from inside philanthropy
  • Building honest and mutual relationships outside philanthropy
  • Expanding the network of social justice philanthropy

Institute Faculty:

  • Dave Beckwith, The Needmor Fund
  • Cris Doby, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
  • Brinda Maira, Merck Family Fund
