NFG Jobs Toolbox: A Funder's Guide to Jobs

Acknowledgements

This Toolbox is one part of the Neighborhood Funders Group's ongoing effort to encourage grantmakers to enter the world of jobs and employment-related funding. Its publication and simultaneous posting on our website is the next step in providing a framework for foundations wishing to develop, expand or fine tune programs related to jobs. Our website will include a members-only discussion area or further information exchange on jobs-related funding. We will update the Toolbox over the coming years and welcome your comments, suggestions, and additions.

The inspiration for the Toolbox came from NFG members who wanted to build on our 1996 conference, Jobs and the Economy. Over many months, NFG staff and members evaluated an NFG grantmaker survey on jobs issues, discussed emerging employment issues and strategies, and developed the framework for the Jobs Toolbox. Committee members Bob Giloth of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Kathy Merchant of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, and Jack Litzenberg of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation shepherded the project from its inception. We appreciate the time and comments of Bettie Hodges of the Marin Community Foundation, Regina McGraw of the Wieboldt Foundation, Sandra Mikush of the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation and Mary Jo Mullan of the F.B. Heron Foundation, who reviewed early drafts of the Toolbox.

The Center for Community Change, under the direction of Executive Director Andy Mott, researched and wrote the Jobs Toolbox. Jerry Jones was the team leader, working with Ruth Goins, a consultant on community development and philanthropy formerly with the Charles Stewart Mott and Northwest Area Foundations; and Alan Okagaki, an economic development consultant formerly with Shorebank Advisory Services.

Catherine Lerza provided excellent editorial assistance and the Toolbox was designed by Ceci Butler of Barking Dog Design.

We are grateful to the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for their generous financial support of this Jobs Toolbox.
