Victor Quintana, who has worked with the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock since 1998, will retire as the Senior Program Officer/Assistant Director at the end of August 2014.
Those of us on the Veatch Program staff who have been fortunate enough to work closely with Victor have benefitted enormously from his wisdom and have internalized his vision and approach to grantmaking. Over the 17 years that Victor has served the Veatch Program, he has consistently championed strategic grantmaking to build a progressive movement for social change in America. His knowledge of the critical history and role of the labor movement, of the need for a range of strategies from research to “boots on the ground” activism, and of the critical role of base-building “anchor” organizations has guided Veatch grantmaking for over a decade.
Victor has proudly served in leadership positions on the boards of Neighborhood Funders Group, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees, Progressive Technology Project, and the Working Group on Labor and Community Partnerships.
Prior to joining the staff of the Veatch Program, Victor was the executive director of a youth and adult entrepreneurship program for inner-city residents offered by Columbia Business School. Before his position at Columbia, he served as the founding director of a healthcare program to ensure that individuals who were HIV-positive or had AIDS received a continuum of care when they changed residency from Puerto Rico to New York and vice versa. Victor also served in the mayoral administration of David Dinkins, in which he was first Director of Constituency Affairs in the Mayor’s Office and later Chief of Staff at the Department of Environmental Protection. During the 1984-85 academic year, he was a Revson Program Fellow at Columbia University.
