The Center for Cultural Power (the Center) is an artist-of-color-led organization building the infrastructure and cultural assets to support artists and storytellers to drive social change. We activate authentic narratives and amplify stories that shift culture and push for structural transformation. Our work resides at the intersection of migration, climate chaos, and gender, racial and cultural justice. Our primary strategy is to invest directly in artists who work on a range of diverse and emergent issues.

The Center will publicly launch in 2020 and builds on the foundation established by CultureStrike and the CEL Education Fund. We recently expanded our Development Team with a new Director for Strategic Partnerships in the lead to meet ambitious goals that will scale up the organization over the next 3 years. The Development Team is charged both with expanding our private foundation grants (our current primary source of funding) as well as diversifying our funding base, anchoring major donor and earned revenue strategies.

Position Overview

With increasing demand for The Center’s cultural organizing expertise, the Development Manager will play a lynchpin role helping the organization build strong philanthropic partnerships and sustain the organization financially as it grows. Our ideal candidate can manage a high volume of details with ease, is strong on organizational systems, and has direct experience with fundraising, including strong writing and communication skills that will build lasting relationships with foundations and major donors.

This position will report to the Director of Strategic Partnerships and work with members of the Program and Communications Team on a regular basis.

The Work & Responsibilities

Grants Management
  • Design and maintain strong systems, tools, and records of all foundation data, and track communications, progress/next steps, agreements, and reporting requirements.
  • Manage all proposal writing and reporting workflow with attention to detail, deadlines and strategy, writing drafts and coordinating with the Program and Finance teams for feedback on a proactive timeline - never miss a deadline!
  • Manage funder portals, proposal submissions, and reporting.
  • Generate acknowledgements for all incoming funds for both the Center for Cultural Power and our fiscally sponsored projects; design and implement funder engagement and appreciation protocols.
Fundraising Strategy Support
  • Contribute to the Development Team’s overall fundraising plan and track progress towards the plan, including researching new opportunities like earned revenue streams.
  • Support the Executive Director and the Director of Strategic Partnerships with funder research, prospecting, and cultivation
  • Prepare materials and documentation necessary for ongoing relationship stewardship with all core funders.
  • Keep tabs on the most exciting and compelling work of the organization, supporting participatory learning processes, writing case studies, and documenting progress towards grant deliverables.
Individual Donors and Special Events
  • Establish and manage an early stage major donor cultivation program
  • Support the Executive Team members in one-to-one donor outreach
  • Manage donor records in a database and lead on donor communications (email sends)
  • Organize all aspects of donor cultivation events.
Communications and Marketing
  • Support Communications team in planning and executing regular communications with funders, including creating, refining, and maintaining a clear and unified organizational voice.
  • Develop, review, and/or project manage timely, relevant and high-quality e-newsletters, decks, reports, case statements, campaign letters, and institutional marketing materials.
  • Follow the organization's online presence to ensure our web-based platforms support our organizational, programmatic, and fundraising goals.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates that are self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly-organized. You must possess an ability to work well under pressure, as part of a team and individually. You are an excellent communicator, and exercise tact and understand nuance in communications. Like others on our team, you are deeply committed to working with migrant communities, diverse populations, and to social justice. 

Our ideal candidate is motivated by a fast-paced environment, is excited to design and maintain systems to keep all trains on track, and works in a relational and collaborative manner across departments and with external supporters. 

Required

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications:

  • A proven track record as a successful fundraiser in the non-profit field; 
  • Three to five years of fundraising experience with a background in foundation and major donor fundraising in the non-profit field;
  • Natural ability to thrive in a diverse and woman of color-led environment;
  • Detail-oriented and able to anticipate organizational, workflow, and communications needs, and follow through on multiple projects/deadlines with minimal oversight;
  • Effective project manager, and capable multitasker; with experience responding to multiple priorities while maintaining a positive attitude;
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
  • Must be flexible and adaptable; and
  • Must be technologically proficient in Google office suite, and Salesforce database.
Preferred 

We prefer candidates that:

  • Write clear, structured, articulate, and compelling proposals. 
  • Have knowledge of arts practices, arts funders or immigrant rights issues and funders.
  • Have first-hand experience with successful major donor cultivation campaigns, and/or building earned revenue streams.
  • Have background, experience, and foundational understanding of social media management, institutional marketing, and/or content production.
  • Are familiar with MailChimp and Slack.
