Executive Director | The Song Foundation

Position:
Executive Director
Location:
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Organization Name:
The Song Foundation

The Song Foundation was founded in November 2019 by Dug and Linh Song to invest in the innovative people and organizations who are improving the quality of life for all in Southeast Michigan and helping to build a more just and equitable world.

To date, Dug and Linh have operated as a family foundation with a small working board but no professional staff, quickly distributing millions in the foundation’s first full year toward civil rights (e.g., voting rights, immigrant rights), criminal justice reform, (e.g., expungement), equity (e.g., healthcare, education, housing), and emergency relief (e.g., food and financial security, small business grants) during the pandemic.

The Foundation is now seeking its inaugural Executive Director, to work in partnership with the board to lead the development and strategic growth of this Ann Arbor, Michigan-based organization. The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Foundation, which includes developing a strategic plan in collaboration with the board, launching and managing initial grantmaking programs, identifying and leading partnership activities, ensuring day-to-day operations, representing the Foundation externally, and helping grantees and the board measure and evaluate impact and success.

The ideal candidate will be dynamic, diplomatic, entrepreneurial, and experienced, with a proven ability to guide a mission-driven organization from a start-up to a high-functioning family foundation committed to best practices. They must be comfortable working very closely with a board in a “hands-on” way, have excellent planning, facilitation, interpersonal and communication skills, and a track record of organizational leadership and management. The Executive Director will report to the board and partner with Plante Moran, the Foundation’s advisory group, on financial and administrative matters.

The first priority in this start-up effort will be for the Executive Director to work with the board through a comprehensive vision and strategic planning process to articulate the Foundation’s mission and focus areas and determine strategies and approaches to advance the board’s philanthropic vision.
