Vice President of Programs | AAPIP
Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP) was founded in 1990 in direct response to the lack of strategic investments in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Its mission is to expand and mobilize resources for AAPI communities to build a more just and equitable society. As a national organization with eleven chapters around the country, our dynamic membership includes more than 2,000 members representing 100 foundations and corporate grantmaking institutions as well as individuals from philanthropic support organizations, giving circles and AAPI-serving nonprofit organizations throughout the United States.
The Vice President of Programs is responsible for AAPIP’s program strategy and implementation. The successful candidate will take the lead in designing, executing, and sustaining AAPIP’s programmatic agenda aligned with its evolving 4th Decade strategic framework. Reporting to the President & CEO, the VP of Programs identifies emerging trends in social justice philanthropy and recommends new initiatives for effective philanthropy to advance AAPI communities with a cross-racial and gender justice lens. As a strong strategic partner with the President and the AAPIP team, the VP of Programs serves in a visible leadership role and advocacy voice on behalf of AAPIP in the philanthropic sector and is a critical point of contact for external constituencies, often on complex issues requiring sensitive diplomacy. Their strong interpersonal and facilitation skills will enable them to work collaboratively and effectively inside and outside the organization. They will have highly developed project management skills, including an ability to perform effectively under pressure, facing multiple time-sensitive priorities, all while maintaining the highest level of personal and professional integrity and standards.
Salary Range: $105,000-$125,000 per year
- Work with the CEO to refine and implement the organization’s emerging vision and strategy.
- Deepen AAPIP’s impact by working with community foundations, corporate funders, private foundations, public funds, and other philanthropic vehicles
- Identify, nurture, and implement new collaborative projects with regional and national philanthropic organizations.
- Explore new strategic opportunities and approaches within AAPIP’s strategic framework to advance racial and gender justice.
Program Leadership & Management
- Develop, implement, and evolve AAPIP’s programs in service to its new strategic framework and plan, ensuring programmatic excellence
- Demonstrate consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve program goals.
- Implement and ensure programmatic grant deliverables are met or exceeded.
- Work with the President across a variety of areas and strategies to ensure that AAPIP maintains a respected and effective strategic position and profile in social justice philanthropy
- Work with staff to develop systems to ensure consistent, high-quality project management.
- Work collectively with the AAPIP team to build and support an organizational culture that connects AAPIP’s vision, mission and values to our ongoing operations.
- Supervise, mentor and provide general direction to program staff, including strategic thought partnership, professional development, problem resolution and performance evaluation.
- Proactively build on and strengthen AAPIP’s thought leadership and relationships with other relevant philanthropic intermediaries, social justice funders, giving circles, and community leaders in the field to foster regular sharing of critical information, lessons learned, strategies, and tactics.
- Exercise excellent judgment as an instrumental leader and public face within the AAPIP community and partners. Navigate relationships through collaboration, kindness, service and candor.
- Speak on behalf of AAPIP and represent the organization in key meetings and events
- Work with the President and VP of Partnerships to cultivate existing relationships and develop new funder relationships.
Resource and New Work Development
- In close collaboration with the President and VP of Partnerships, advocate successfully with and inspire current and potential funding partners to support AAPIP’s programs and work.
- Assist in building AAPIP’s ability to spot trends in philanthropy and in the social justice movement ecosystem with a keen eye towards new work development and ensuring the success of AAPIP’s business model and plans.
- In service to racial equity goals and transformative change, develop the necessary systems, processes, and tools to better support the facilitation, collection, and sharing of knowledge generated by the programs.
- Develop dissemination systems to share organizational learning with a broad range of communities and stakeholders.
- Ensure that programs are evaluated and leveraged for maximum impact in philanthropy and in AAPI communities.
- Work collaboratively with the senior management team to integrate cross program activities and functions.
Program Strategy & Management: The ideal candidate takes a hands-on approach in leading a variety of initiatives, with a demonstrated ability to work in an ever-changing, fast-paced landscape:
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, inspire, and unite colleagues and stakeholders around a shared vision and a concrete plan of action to advance the mission and drive change
- Demonstrated ability to set and meet deadlines, and manage, prioritize, and plan work activities effectively.
- Demonstrated leadership ability to break down information into actionable goals and to lead others in program implementation.
- A minimum of seven years’ professional experience with progressive leadership and management responsibility, preferably in a philanthropy, membership, or nonprofit environment.
- Proven experience with fiscal management, budgeting, and operations, including responsibility for developing and managing a program budget.
- Meticulous attention to detail, with flexibility to switch gears, and multi-task in fast paced environment
- Strong work ethic, roll up the sleeves team player that actively pitches in where needed

Relationship Building and Development: As a high profile leader, the VP of Programs will be a persuasive, credible, and polished communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record as a consummate team player:
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically, both verbally and in writing, to staff, board, members, and the general public
- Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills, and coalition builder with ability to engage at all levels of philanthropy, including success with multi-organizational alliances.
- Exceptional judgement as a partner to the CEO and a steward to the AAPIP community
- Ability to maintain a high degree of diplomacy, confidentiality, and professionalism in all aspects of the job, including displaying courtesy and sensitivity in all contacts
- Experience with AAPIP and AAPI community organizations, and general knowledge about AAPI community resources.
